Perimetry, also known as visual field testing, is a diagnostic procedure that measures the full extent of a patient's peripheral (side) vision. It is a critical tool for detecting, monitoring, and managing a range of eye and neurological conditions. What is Perimetry?

Perimetry maps the complete field of vision — both central and peripheral — to identify any areas of reduced sensitivity or vision loss (scotomas). The test is performed one eye at a time and generates a detailed map of visual function across the entire visual field.

How is Perimetry Performed?

Automated perimetry is a simple, non-invasive test. The patient sits in front of a perimeter bowl and presses a button each time they see a light stimulus appear. The test evaluates the sensitivity of vision across the entire visual field.

Steps of the Test

  • One eye is tested at a time; the other is covered
  • The patient fixates on a central target
  • Lights of varying brightness appear at different locations
  • The patient responds each time a light is detected
  • A computer generates a detailed visual field map
  • Results are compared with normal values to identify abnormalities
